The State of Mexico is located
in Mexico’s central region in a zone of mountains and
valleys. The State of Mexico borders the states of
Queretaro, Hidalgo, Morelos, Guerrero, Tlaxcala, Puebla,
Michoacán and Mexico City. Thanks to its pleasant climate,
it is one of the most visited destinations in Mexico.
Among its many “Magical Towns,” you can visit Valle de
Bravo, the ideal place to relax and enjoy recreational
activities. The town has a gorgeous lake, cobblestone
streets and houses with red tile roofs. It’s also an
excellent spot to do water sports and adventure tours. In
the surrounding areas, you can visit the Bosencheve National
Park, the Monte Alto Reserve, and 25 km (15 mi) to the north
lays the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, where monarch
butterflies come to nest each year from November to March.
Another good place to relax is Ixtapan de la Sal, famous for
its therapeutic thermal springs.
Among the most traditional towns are Metepec, known for its
pottery, and Tepotzotlan, where you can see beautiful
constructions such as the Ex Convent of San Francisco
Javier, one of the most representative examples of Mexican
Baroque architecture.
In Toluca, the capital, you can learn about the state’s
important history and culture as you visit the various
museums. You can also check out the Cosmovitral, one of the
largest botanical gardens in the world. About 48 km (30 mi)
southwest is the Nevado de Toluca National Park, the ideal
place for mountain bike riding and rock climbing.
The state of Mexico also has notable archaeological zones,
such as Malinalco and Teotihuacán, one of the most important
pre-Hispanic capitals of ancient Mexico.
