Puerto Morelos, is located at
the main entrance of the "Riviera Maya" at only 15 minutes
(18 km / 11 miles) south of the Cancun International
Airport, down the coast of the State of Quintana Roo. Puerto
Morelos is the perfect contrast between the glamorous
five-star Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Its low-key people
and interesting sites offer unique activities tailored to
individual and all kind of groups.
Puerto Morelos is a place where the tradition of fishing for
a living still survives, and the boom in tourism is just
beginning. Here the pace is slower and the atmosphere is
laid back and not touristy. There is a zocalo (town square)
in the center of town with a few stores, a dive shop and
some restaurants along its perimeter. The beach in the
center of town is rustic, with small fishing boats on the
sand and moored just off shore. The main fishing pier and
the lighthouse are the primary points of interest, with
friendly locals and some good photo opportunities. You can
expect to be offered an excursion to the reefs from here
since most of the boats in town are tie up on and around the
main pier.
Compared to its well known neighbors, Puerto Morelos
definitely moves to a different beat. In fact, Puerto
Morelos is decidedly easy going and bohemian in the best
sense of the word. Residents include entrepreneurs,
painters, artisans, marine biologists, dive masters,
doctors, local fishermen and foreigners from all continents.
Here, the new age tourists come to experience Reiki and
Energy Balancing massages, Meditation, Yoga and special
spiritual workshops. You will hear English, Dutch, French,
German, Italian, Mayan and of course Spanish spoken at one
time or another. There is virtually no crime, making it one
of the reasons why many foreigners have chosen Puerto
Morelos as their home. It has a wide variety of guest
houses, bed and breakfast, condominiums and hotels that
range from moderate to deluxe and "All Inclusive."
Throughout the year, there is always a cooling offshore
breeze along its tropical shoreline. The rainy season
extends from June to the middle of November. From December
through May, the skies are a sure blue with low humidity and
temperatures ranging from 16 °C (60 degrees F) at night to
33 °C (90 degrees F) during the day. Water temperature
remains constant at 24 - 26°C (76-78 degrees F.) May and
June are delightful months with temperatures only slightly
higher than December to April. July and August are hot and
somewhat humid.

The beaches in
Puerto Morelos are mostly natural and not maintained or
manicured for the tourists, except where restaurants, hotels
and private beach house owners choose to do so. There is a
nice beach in the center of town by the Pelicanos
restaurant, just off the zocalo (town square). The beach is
cleaner here but sometimes with some eel grass washed up on
shore. There are beaches north and south. Most are natural
and some sections are raked and cleaned. Footwear is
recommended for water entry and they water is perfect for
snorkeling and swimming when the sea is calm.
