ECOTOURISM
CENTRE LACANJÁ CHANSAYAB
An ecological
center with 16 cabins, located in front of the Natural
Reserve of the Biosphere Montes Azules (Blue Mountains) in
Marques de Comillas, Chiapas
Las Guacamayas is to be found 252 km from Palenque and is
reached by the Southern Frontier Highway (Carretera
Fronteriza del Sur) to Benemérito de las Americas, there one
turns onto an unpaved road of approximately 36 km (22.5
miles) the distance is only three hours from Comitan de
Dominguez. Las Guacamayas is within the community of Reforma
Agraria, in the municipality of Marques de Comillas, in the
jungle region of the state and it was created in order to
preserve the Red Guacamayas (Scarlet Macaws), birds that are
in danger of extinction.
Las Guacamayas, has been constructed in complete harmony
with its natural surroundings and it is administered by an
indigenous cooperative named "Ara Macao", made up of members
from the community of Reforma Agraria and with the financial
support of the Secretariat of Tourism of Chiapas and, by the
National Support Fund created by the federal government to
help indigenous projects in Mexico.
The Center is ideal for lovers of nature and here it is
possible to observe birds in their natural surroundings, to
do trekking in the jungle, explore flora and fauna unique to
the region, go touring in boats on the rivers Lacantun and
Tzeldales and enjoy camping. What about nature paths of 1200
hectares of jungle that give you the opportunity to observe
in their natural habitat, species like: Howler Monkeys, the
red Guacamaya, the white tail deer, the toucan and the white
falcon, among others.
The region has a humid warm climate with abundant rains in
summer and is inhabited by the ethnic group Chinanteco. The
people of the ejido Reforma Agraria come from the State of
Oaxaca, the region of Chinantecas and speak Chinanteca
language.
