ECOTOURISM
CENTER CAUSAS VERDES LAS NUBES
An Ecotourism Center
considered the paradise of Chiapas with 26 cabins, located
in Maravilla Tenejapa, Lacandon Jungle, Chiapas
The Ecotourism Center Causas Verdes Las Nubes (the Clouds,)
is one of the most successful ecotourism center of Chiapas and it
is a natural wonder in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle, in
the municipality of Maravilla Tenejapa. The center is
located 120 kilometers (three hours) from Comitan de
Dominguez and 50 km from the Guacamayas, by the carretera
Fronteriza (border highway.) This ecotourism center has as a
main attraction the powerful Santo Domingo river that forms
diverse waterfalls of turquoise color and that offers
excellent, strong currents for rafting. When arriving, the
visitor is met by the impressive turquoise color of the
water, deriving from the dissolution of lime rock and
carbonate calcium; and enormous amounts of nutrients from
algae and other microorganisms.
The Santo Domingo river is one of the greater branches of
the river Jataté. Throughout its course, several waterfalls
are formed, which render spectacular beauty to this
Southeastern part of Mexico. A journalist pointed out, that
this is "without doubt a wonderful place, and after you see
it once, its image never leaves your mind." The river
narrows in many places for later to emerge in high
waterfalls, an image that will leave any traveler
astonished. The zone in which the Santo Domingo River is
found has a humid and warm climate with abundant rains in
summer.
Most of the inhabitants of the municipality Maravilla
Tenejapa are native Indians and speaking one tongue only,
they are predominantly Tzotziles and Tzeltales. The
cooperative or ejido of Las Nubes was created by a
presidential resolution in 1980. It is located in a
well-known region of the Lacandon Jungle and has 276
inhabitants. The ejido Las Nubes has been working for more
than five years with ecotourism, based on the principles of
cooperative organization and the handling and conservation
of natural and cultural resources and the preservation of
the environment.
The landscape surrounding Las Nubes is simply gorgeous, a
scenery of tall hills that are not suitable for farming or
houses, leaving the landscape intact. Here, one finds
diverse varieties of flowers, such as: Begonias, orchids
known as the flower of May and gigantic trees characteristic
of a tropical forest. Moreover, there are birds such as the
toucan, water ducks, herons and kingfisher, only to mention
some species.
The center is ideal for trekking, swimming, camping and the
