This convent was among the first to be built in the state of Chiapas and is outstanding among the most important and best preserved, although it suffered substantial damage during different periods of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. During the latter two centuries it successively housed a religious school, then the municipal jail, and from 1979 on, a Cultural Center. The ex-convent underwent its most intense restoration work during the years 1998 and 1999, culminating in that year with its reopening as a Cultural Center. In its interior one finds the Museum of Lacquer Work, the Franco Lázaro Hall, The Alejandrino Nandayapa Gallery and the Fray Matías de Cordoba Auditorium. In addition to its beautiful museum spaces, the cultural center offers some services to the public: guided tours in Spanish and English and gift shop, all in the beautiful ambiance of this ex-convent. Courses and seminars are held at this cultural center with the purpose of strengthening the expression of popular art of Chiapa de Corzo. The ex-convent of Santo Domingo is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00 hours.<br> <br> <b>Mudéjar Fountain:</b> Located at the city&#39;s center, this is a construction without comparison in the Latin American colonial art, the golden crown of Spanish-Arab art. According to the city historian Antonio de Remesal, this fountain was designed by Fray Rodrigo de Leon and in his absence was continued by a Spaniard until its completion in 1562. The fountain had a double social function: not only serving as a water supply for the people of the city, but also as a gathering place. The structure rises upon an octagonal platform, shaped by a vault built upon columns and buttresses repeating the number eight. The design has brocade under the vault divided by nervures. The entire fountain is built from brick, some cut into diamond shapes. The use of this material gives it a peculiar texture. Built within the best mudéjar tradition, it achieves a great architectural harmony with elements derived from Moslem art such as the octagonal base shape and the brick work, and the Renaissance-inspired vault and some structural elements derived from the Gothic. It is an original design that neither copies nor imitates other structures.<br> <br> <b>San Sebastian Ruins:</b> Located atop San Gregorio&#39;s Hill with construction dating from the 16th century and whose existence indicates the economic and demographic significance of the city in colonial times - in other towns a single church sufficed. This church has a layout of three naves separated by arches, which were demolished by earthquakes and the passage of time. Still standing are its asp and façade, inscribed in the façade-retable tradition with niches between the pilasters. At San Sebastian we can perceive elements from mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles.<br> <br> <b>Iglesia del Calvario (Church of the Calvary):</b> Located in St. Peter&#39;s parish, built upon a hill next to a ceiba tree. This is a construction dating from the 17th century, remodeled with Neo-gothic forms from the early part of that century. On its façade are two polychrome bas-reliefs. In the interior is a wooden relief that may have been part of an altarpiece from the church of Santo Domingo in this same city. Judging from its style it must be from the 16th century - consequently it is considered as one of Mexico&#39;s oldest churches. It shows the descent of Christ from the cross, apparently inspired from a European stamp of that epoch, and it is one of the best examples of Mexican Renaissance art.<br> <br> </font><font
